CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The recent U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report “Potential Uses of Electronically Readable Cards for Medicare Beneficiaries and Providers” found that Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) need electronically readable cards for, “authenticating beneficiary and provider presence at the point of care, electronically exchanging beneficiary medical information, and electronically conveying beneficiary identity and insurance information to providers.” Electronically readable cards have magnetic stripes, bar codes, and/or smart chips that can securely process data. Current manual patient registration processes are no longer effective and automated identity authentication solutions need to be implemented to ensure patient privacy and safety. The financial industry has also announced new regulations that require all providers to implement point of service (POS) terminals that accept electronically readable smart cards and a variety of payment methods for privacy and security standards by October 15th, 2015. VeriFone (NYSE: PAY) readers are one example of a POS terminal that accepts EMV (smart cards), magstripe, and mobile phones (through Near Field Communication). The combination of accurate patient identification using electronically readable cards or mobile devices, and the ability to accept and process payments simultaneously during registration accelerates revenue cycles for providers and payers. Additionally, accurate patient identification provides correct and up-to-date information for billing. The indisputable problems of fraud, misidentification, duplicate and overlay records, keystroke errors, and disparate systems are leading factors in the recent modifications to current end-user, payer and patient regulations.

The industry is prepared to adopt automated authentication solutions that validate patient identity and link a patient to their correct record to drastically reduce human errors at registration. The GAO previously reported and stated in their recent release, “There are three potential factors that can be used to authenticate an individual’s identity: (1) ‘something they possess,’ such as a card, (2) ‘something they know,’ such as a password or personal identification number (PIN), and (3) ‘something they are,’ such as biometric information, for example, a fingerprint, or a picture ID.”
